Gas Line Services
Gas Utility Coordination & Integration
Reliable coordination with FortisBC and regional gas utilities is essential for every gas line installation, upgrade, and service. We handle meter connections, service requests, pressure testing notifications, and compliance scheduling — so your utility work runs smoothly from inspection to activation.
Why It Matters
Why Utility Coordination Matters
FortisBC Partnership & Trade Ally Status
As a FortisBC Trade Ally Network member, we have direct lines to the utility, expedited scheduling, and pre-approved contractor status. Your work gets prioritized because we're recognized partners in BC's gas safety ecosystem. This status means faster permit approvals, early communication on outages or line work, and integration into FortisBC's preferred-contractor network for homeowner referrals.
Seamless Project Integration
Gas line work doesn't happen in isolation. We coordinate inspection timing, service activation, pressure testing sign-offs, and meter connections—ensuring utilities sign off when Technical Safety BC does, preventing costly delays. A furnace installation, for example, requires Technical Safety BC's certificate before gas can flow; we schedule inspections so both authorities complete their work without conflicts or re-do inspections.
Regulatory Compliance & Permitting
Technical Safety BC regulates gas safety in British Columbia under the Safety Standards Act. We navigate permit requirements, inspection schedules, and utility notifications so you avoid reinspections and project holds. Every gas line installation or service triggers permit paperwork; our experience means zero surprises on your end.
Local Knowledge of All Service Areas
We serve Terrace, Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Burns Lake, and Vanderhoof—each with its own utility landscape. FortisBC covers most of our territory, but we're familiar with regional variances and can handle multi-area coordination. Coastal communities like Prince Rupert have unique challenges; inland Highway 16 corridor towns have different inspection timing. We know each market.
15+ Years of Gas Trade Experience
Our team carries Journeyman Sheet Metal Worker and Certified Gas Contractor credentials. We understand utility constraints, inspection workflows, and code alignment from the ground up. We don't treat utilities as obstacles—we treat them as partners in getting safe systems online. That expertise translates into faster turnarounds and fewer complications for your project.
Complete Compliance Documentation
We provide a complete file for every project: permits, inspection certificates, pressure test results, and utility approval paperwork. This protects your property and ensures your system is registered correctly for safety recalls and service history—your proof that the work is safe, registered, and compliant with all provincial and local requirements.

Our Process
How We Coordinate with Your Utility
1. Pre-Work Assessment & Utility Requirements
We review your location, system scope, and the applicable utility provider (typically FortisBC in Prince George, Terrace, Kitimat, Burns Lake, and Vanderhoof). We identify what permits, inspections, and notifications are required before work begins, and confirm whether your utility requires a service call or meter connection. For a furnace installation or water heater upgrade, this stage determines whether the existing gas service line is sufficient or whether FortisBC needs to upgrade the meter or incoming line.
-
Confirm the applicable utility provider for your location -
Identify all required permits, inspections, and notifications -
Determine whether a service call or meter connection is needed -
Assess whether the existing gas service line is sufficient -
Flag any meter or incoming-line upgrades FortisBC must handle -
Map the full utility sequence before any work begins
2. Permit & Inspection Scheduling
Technical Safety BC issues permits for gas work in British Columbia. We submit documentation, coordinate inspection scheduling, and notify the utility in advance—so inspectors can access the site and utilities can prepare for any meter or service-line work without delays. This is why gas permit management and utility coordination go hand-in-hand—the permit brings the inspector, and we make sure FortisBC is ready at the same time.
-
Submit all permit documentation to Technical Safety BC -
Coordinate inspection scheduling around your project timeline -
Notify FortisBC in advance of any meter or service-line work -
Ensure inspectors can access the site on scheduled dates -
Align permit approval with utility readiness -
Keep you updated on scheduling at every step
3. On-Site Work & Compliance Documentation
Our crew carries out the installation or service while maintaining full compliance with Technical Safety BC and utility codes. We conduct pressure testing, pressure-decay testing, and combustion safety checks as required, and document all results for the utility and inspector. Pressure testing confirms the gas line holds pressure safely; the test report then goes to both FortisBC and Technical Safety BC as proof of system integrity.
-
Carry out the installation or service to code -
Conduct pressure testing and pressure-decay testing -
Perform combustion safety checks as required -
Document all test results for the utility and inspector -
Prepare a pressure test report proving system integrity -
Submit documentation to both FortisBC and Technical Safety BC
4. Utility Sign-Off & Service Activation
Once Technical Safety BC inspects and approves, we notify the utility for final sign-off, meter testing (if applicable), and service activation. For new connections or upgrades, FortisBC's technician may need to connect at the meter or supply line—we make sure all parties are coordinated and the system passes final checks. This is where our gas safety checks and utility coordination converge: the system is both code-certified and utility-approved before anyone turns a valve.
-
Notify the utility once Technical Safety BC approves -
Coordinate meter testing where applicable -
Schedule FortisBC service activation at the meter or supply line -
Ensure all parties are aligned for the final connection -
Confirm the system passes all final checks -
Verify the system is both code-certified and utility-approved
5. Ongoing Documentation & Compliance Records
We provide you with a complete file: permits, inspection certificates, pressure test results, and utility approval paperwork. This protects your property and ensures your system is registered correctly for safety recalls and service history. You'll have official Technical Safety BC inspection certificates and utility approval documents—your proof that the system is safe, registered, and compliant with all provincial and local requirements.

Common Questions
Utility Coordination — Common Questions
Coordination timelines depend on permit availability and inspector scheduling. Most projects are completed within 1–2 weeks from initial permit submission. We expedite where possible and keep you updated on every step.
We serve five communities across northern BC. While FortisBC is the primary provider, smaller areas may have municipal or independent utilities. We're familiar with regional variations and can handle coordination for any provider in our service territory.
Utility providers may charge connection fees, meter upgrades, or service-activation fees—these are utility charges, not our coordination cost. We clarify all utility fees upfront so there are no surprises.
Yes. Technical Safety BC requires permits for all new gas appliance connections—furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, pool heaters, and grills. We handle the permit work; you focus on the system.
If inspection reveals a code violation, we address it immediately and schedule a re-inspection. This is rare when work is done right the first time, and our compliance record reflects that.
No. Gas must not flow until Technical Safety BC and the utility have completed their inspections and issued approval. We ensure the sequence is correct every time.
Pressure testing confirms the system holds pressure safely. We pressurize the line, measure for leaks, and run a pressure-decay test. Results go to the inspector and utility. It's non-destructive and required by code.
We coordinate meter work with the utility. If your upgrade requires a larger meter or a new service line, we liaise with FortisBC's meter technician and ensure the utility work aligns with our installation schedule.
Our service area covers five communities. If you need coordination across different utility territories, we manage that seamlessly—it's part of our regional expertise.
We provide you with official Technical Safety BC inspection certificates and utility approval documents. These are your proof that the system is safe, registered, and compliant.
